On a recent trip to the Kgalagadi in South Africa I was lucky enough to witness an amazing encounter between a leopard and a jackal. Watch the video below to see it and read below the video for an account of the interaction with spoilers for the video.
We saw a leopard sitting in the open who soon moved to cover. We then noticed a jackal lying by our car. Soon after the leopard silently stalked across the riverbed to the sleeping jackal, taking a full 12 minutes to reach it. At the last second the leopard stuck and caught the leopard. It then dragged it across the riverbed, up the dunes and into a tree. We thought that was it so I switched the camera off and chatted to a vehicle next to us. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the jackal leap from the tree with the leopard in hot pursuit. I quickly switched on my camera to capture the limping jackal run away and the leopard look confused and hungry.
